The Housing Act of 1949 reshaped US history and changed the economic landscape for many minorities. Urban renewal projects, touted as ways to clear slums and build affordable housing, instead paved the way for highways, sports venues, and government buildings. Yet, what’s often left unsaid is that the bulldozers demolished hundreds of minority-owned homes and businesses and thousands of people were displaced.
